This book, a companion volume to my contemporary sociological theories, covers the main currents of sociological thought for about the last forty years. It deals with the theories of general sociology that appeared after publication of contemporary sociological theories in 1928. Taken together, the two volumes give a critical account of the state of general sociology from the end of the nineteenth century up in 1965. Like the earlier volume, this work endeavors to examination critically the principal types of recent theories, and the works of individual sociologists enter this examination only insofar as they represent these types.
