International Military And Defense Encyclopedia Volume 3 G-L
Under the guidance of Dupuy, the dean of military writers, the publisher has created a definitive compendium of contemporary military information for the use of today's strategic thinkers and decision makers. The work is aptly titled. This is not a conventional "drum and trumpet" study of military battles and tactics. Such works abound, the best being Dupuy's own Encyclopedia of Military History (1970). It is instead a thorough guide to the modern world's military organizations, doctrine, and hardware; 90 percent of its subject matter is post-1945. It is aimed squarely at world government and military experts, the defense industry, and advanced students and contains just enough "traditional" military history to add historical perspective. Dupuy's approach is to provide fewer, but longer, articles within this framework, to make them interdisciplinary in nature, and to integrate them with other, related, subjects. This is accomplished in part by providing a bibliography at the end of each article. Such densely matrixed subject matter demands sophisticated finding aids, and this encyclopedia has good ones. Its articles, by some 370 international experts, are grouped into 17 discrete subject areas such as Aerospace Forces, Logistics, and Combat Theory. The index is meticulous and easy to use. This work is essential for military, government, and academic collections and is highly recommended to larger public libraries.
